Well, this wasn't quite that sickenly sweet of a story, but you caught the unmistakeable surprise of a guy who thinks he's a geek having the 'homecoming queen' pick him out of the crowd . . . which in itself is hilarious to observe.
Only boo-boo; you used 'cerulean' twice in the first 4 paragraphs . . . there's got to be another shade of that color pallette you could use . . . just a thought.
